10 THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED ABOUT DISNEY AND PIXAR’S UP
By Candice Chua
Can you believe it’s been 10 years since it hit the big screen? The tears!
It has been 10 years since Russell, Carl, Dug and Kevin found their way into our hearts and with the film’s anniversary happening this month, we think it is the perfect time to look back at some interesting details you may have missed from this beloved animated classic. Let’s go, and remember – adventure is out there!
#1:
To gather inspiration for the mountainous setting in Up, the creative team went on their own adventure in South America, trekking and climbing Mount Roraima in Guyana.
#2:
In most Pixar films, characters are usually six to seven heads tall. Carl is only three heads tall!
#3:
The adorable Russell was initially named Lewis. His name was eventually changed to avoid confusion with the protagonist in Disney’s Meet the Robinsons.
#4:
Many of the drawings in Ellie’s Adventure Book were drawn by director Peter Docter’s daughter – and she voiced the character of Young Ellie, too!
#5:
One of the toughest things the technical team had to work on was the massive balloon canopy that carries Carl’s house. They ended up using 10,297 balloons for the floating scenes, and a whopping 20,622 when the house lifted off.
#6:
When designing Kevin, ostriches were brought onto the Pixar Animation Studios grounds for inspiration. The animators also studied emus and cassowaries.
#7:
Paradise Falls may have been inspired by the real-life Angel Falls, the tallest waterfall on Earth, but the former is actually three times taller!
#8:
Russell’s circular design and Carl’s square design were deliberate: the former is static and immovable, like a brick wall, while the latter is dynamic, both which speak about the characters’ personalities.
#9:
Up is the first film in history to be nominated for both the “Best Picture” and “Best Animated Feature Film”. It was also the first 3D film ever to open the Cannes International Film Festival.
#10:
And, for the final fact, did you know that Up is Pixar’s 10th film? Perfect fact for the 10th anniversary of a 10-out-of-10 film!
