7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU WATCH MARVEL STUDIOS’ CAPTAIN MARVEL
By Oh My Disney
Are you ready to go higher, further and faster?
Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is almost here and we are so thrilled, we can hardly contain it! With Captain Marvel a.k.a. Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) being the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the fact that the movie is set before most of the Marvel Studios films that we know and love, the latest instalment gives us so much to look forward to.
Captain Marvel’s epic journey of self-discovery!
The Kree and the Skrull!
Nick Fury with two eyes!
The film’s release cannot come any sooner. To get you pumped up and all caught up, we rounded up seven things you need to know about it before you head to the cinema.
#1: THE FIRST FEMALE DIRECTOR
For the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female franchise, Captain Marvel finds its director in Anna Boden, making her the first female director in the MCU. She co-directs Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck.
#2: IT TAKES PLACE IN THE NINETIES
This would mean that Captain Marvel predates all of Marvel Studios’ other films except Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger. It also means that we’re seeing a much younger version of the Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) we know. We’ll see Fury at the start of his career as an agent within the government.
#3: GET READY TO SEE SOME FAMILIAR FACES
Nick Fury isn’t the only face you’ll recognise. There is also Agent Coulson (played by Clark Gregg), who is just beginning his work at S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Ronan (played by Lee Pace) and Korath (played by Djimon Hounsou), both of whom we first met in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy.
#4: THE FILM SETS ARE LEGIT
How legit, you ask? For one of the scenes shot in Los Angeles, the filmmakers took an old mall in North Hollywood and built a completely new façade from it. The location looked so real that people drove up to go into it, not realising that it was really a movie set! Now, we need to see this set for ourselves.
#5: THE CAST FLEW IN REAL FIGHTER PLANES
Larson and Lashana Lynch (who plays Danvers’ best friend Maria Rambeau) spent time with Brigadier General Jeannie M. Leavitt, the United States Air Force’s first female pilot and the first woman to command a USAF combat fighter wing. To add further authenticity to the flying scenes, they even had some once-in-a-lifetime training at the Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. Barrel-rolling in fighter planes and everything.
#6: THE SEARCH FOR GOOSE
The filmmakers auditioned several cats to play the feline character of Goose and ended up with an adorable team of four cats: Reggie, Archie, Rizzo and Gonzo. Another fun fact? Everyone on set was surprised at how great Jackson was with cats. The man’s a cat lover!
#7: BRIE LARSON TRAINED REALLY, REALLY HARD
To get herself physically ready for the role, Larson trained for two to four hours a day, five days a week, through a combination of boxing, kick-boxing, judo, wrestling and jiu-jitsu. By the end of it, she was lifting 225 pounds in deadlifts and pulling an actual jeep down the road. YOU. GO. GIRL. We absolutely cannot wait to see her prowess unfold on the big screen.
