HOW TO THROW THE ULTIMATE SISTERS’ DAY MOVIE MARATHON
Sisters. They take our clothes without asking – and we take theirs in return, let’s be honest! – but at the end of it all, you know that they will always be in your corner as your biggest cheerleaders and partners-in-mischief. With Sisters’ Day coming up this weekend, celebrate the bond that you have by throwing the ultimate sisters-themed movie marathon with some of Disney’s most famous sisters. Remember to grab the sandwiches, chocolate, pink and blue cake and perhaps a sprinkle of seaweed! (Kudos to you if you got all those references without looking at our list below.)
1. The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning
It all began with The Little Mermaid, but it is in the prequel Ariel’s Beginning that we come to know Ariel’s relationship with her six sisters: Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella and Alana. (Yes, all of their names start with an “A”!) While you may not have as many sisters as Ariel does, you will surely be reminded of your own sisters, from the brainy Attina to the mischievous Andrina, as you join the seven young mermaids on their quest to bring music back into their underwater kingdom and into the heart of their father, King Triton.
2. Sleeping Beauty
Make it pink! Make it blue! Sleeping Beauty may be about Aurora’s journey, but it is the Three Good Fairies who protect her and help her towards her destination and back home. Flora, Fauna and Merriweather may not always see eye to eye – or know how to bake a cake without magic, for that matter – but when it comes to defeating Maleficent, you won’t find better teamwork anywhere else.
3. The Parent Trap
When you have a twin, trading places for a day at the very least is sort of a pre-requisite. When you’re Hallie and Annie, you’ll need more than a swapping of clothes and haircuts to make the whole act convincing. Starring Lindsay Lohan in her first ever movie role, a pair of precocious twins discover each other’s existence at summer camp and scheme an intricate plot to bring their parents back together again – even though dad is in California and mom is in London. Now, this is what we call a parent trap.
4. Hocus Pocus
Here is a shout-out to all of the nineties kids who hid behind their big sisters while watching this spookily fun Halloween classic way back when. While they may be witches out to get children, Winifred, Mary and Sarah are a truly kooky bunch who play off each other’s abilities – well, up until they’re defeated by a teenage boy and his younger sister. No rest for the wicked!
5. Lilo & Stitch
Sisters have their bad days, but at the end of it all, we know that we will always have each other’s backs, especially when you’re Nani and Lilo. Having a circle of unlikely characters watching out for you – specifically a blue, four-armed extraterrestrial, a fire-spitting luau performer with great hair and a CIA agent-turned-social worked named Cobra Bubbles – certainly helps, too.
6. Frozen
We saved the best for last. When it comes to a heartwarming tale about two sisters going through thick and thin together, no one tops the list quite like Elsa and Anna. Separated by a magic curse thicker than walls, the two sisters find their way back to each other through an unexpected act of true love, guided by a talking snowman who ironically loves summer and a tough but lovable iceman and his reindeer sidekick.
